Inspired by: Man on the Moon - Week 3
English Resource Description
Inspired by the imaginative world of "The Man on the Moon", students embark on a creative journey where they evaluate and craft their own writing. The task at hand involves Bob, a character who reads his newspaper during his commute to the Moon. Today's challenge for Bob is to find a new rocket through the Spaceships for Sale adverts in his paper, as his current one is on the brink of failing its Ministry of Space Travel test. Students are tasked with creating the most compelling advertisement for a spaceship, incorporating special features and persuasive questions designed to captivate Bob's attention. They examine a variety of existing adverts and then, working in pairs, they discuss and 'sell' their own spaceship designs, highlighting the most appealing features to their partner before writing their own adverts. The goal is to create an advertisement that Bob cannot resist, and in doing so, students refine their evaluative and persuasive writing skills.
Meanwhile, in another activity, students focus on grammatical accuracy by using the present and past progressive tenses correctly. Bob, ever the diligent worker, has a list of tasks to complete on the moon, from sweeping its surface to searching for aliens. Students are prompted to write their own lists of lunar jobs, linking the activity with mathematical concepts. They then observe Bob in action, using the 'ing' form to describe his activities in the present progressive tense. Additionally, students delve into Bob's past adventures through his diary entries, exploring the past progressive form to recount his experiences. This not only reinforces their understanding of verb tenses but also sets the stage for creative storytelling about Bob's moon-based escapades.
