Inspired by: Market Scene in a Northern Town - Medium Term Plan

The Year 2 Module 2 of the curriculum takes students on a literary journey inspired by the painting "Market Scene in a Northern Town" by L.S. Lowry. The six-week medium term plan is structured to enhance comprehension, composition, and grammar skills through engaging and interactive lessons. In the first week, the objective focuses on the development of questioning and inferencing skills, with activities that encourage students to plan and verbalise their thoughts prior to writing. They also start to learn about the correct use of basic punctuation marks, including full stops, capital letters, and question marks, and are introduced to using the conjunction 'because' to extend their sentences.

As the weeks progress, the plan delves deeper into various aspects of writing and grammar. Students make inferences from poetry, write about real events, and learn to describe using expanded noun phrases and comparative suffixes like '–er' and '–est'. They also explore narrative writing, discussing favourite words and phrases, and learn to use commas in lists, as well as correctly applying present and past tense verbs, including the progressive form. The module culminates with students participating in discussions, predicting outcomes, and encapsulating their ideas sentence by sentence. Throughout the programme, they will refine their understanding of sentence demarcation and subordination, using conjunctions such as 'when' and 'because' to create complex sentences. The plan is designed to foster a love for language and storytelling, all while drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of a market scene.
