How can we identify and group trees? - Teacher's Notes
Science Resource Description
In this segment of the curriculum, teachers are provided with guidance on how to expand upon their pupils' prior knowledge of trees, which was initially explored in Year 2. The objective is to familiarize pupils with the trees in their immediate surroundings, with a particular emphasis on examining the distinct characteristics of each tree's crown. Pupils are encouraged to observe trees closely, not only at the base but also as high as they can safely examine, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the trees' various features.
Identifying trees will involve careful scrutiny of their barks, which can provide valuable information for differentiation. Additionally, the shape, size, and type of leaves present on each tree are key factors that can aid in identification. During certain seasons, the presence of blossoms can serve as yet another distinguishing feature to consider. The culmination of this learning activity is for pupils to create an identification pack for a range of trees. This resource is intended to be user-friendly and educational, enabling younger pupils within the school to use the pack as a tool to help them identify different tree species within their local environment.
