Staying Safe Lesson Plan
English Resource Description
The "Staying Safe" lesson plan, tailored for Key Stage 2 pupils, begins with a one-minute review of the previous week's topic, allowing the whole class to see the results and feedback. Next, the lesson moves into a two to four-minute starter activity where pupils identify early warning signs of fear, recognizing the feeling associated with these symptoms. This is followed by a brief discussion on why staying safe, particularly outside of school, is a relevant and important topic at the moment.
During the main body of the lesson, which spans 7 to 15 minutes per activity, pupils engage with five stories that depict children in potentially dangerous situations. As they read, they are prompted to indicate when they start feeling uncomfortable by raising whiteboards or saying "stop." This exercise helps them to trust their instincts about safety. Subsequently, they have the chance to discuss why the scenarios are unsafe and what the problems are within these stories. With this understanding, pupils individually consider what actions the children in the stories should take and compare their thoughts with provided advice. For those who finish early or are looking for a further challenge, there is an extension activity where pupils create a home-walking safety guide, applying what they've learned to a practical resource. The lesson concludes with a "Call to Action," encouraging pupils to apply their knowledge in the real world, and a voting session where they review arguments for and against the topic before casting their votes. Throughout the lesson, key vocabulary such as 'Safety', 'Coercion', 'Harassment', and 'Call to Action!' are highlighted, and additional supporting materials are provided for SEND learners.
