Week 28, lesson 5 New High Frequency Words (mouse, called, off, here, asked) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the final lesson of Week 28, young learners are introduced to new high-frequency words (HFWs) that they will encounter often in their reading and writing. The objective of the day is clear: to familiarise students with the words 'mouse', 'called', 'off', 'here', and 'asked'. This lesson is part of the comprehensive Phonics Phase 5, Unit 3, and aims to boost the children’s confidence in recognising and using these common words.
The lesson begins with a 'Quickwrite Words' activity, where children practice writing words that contain graphemes needing extra reinforcement. This interactive exercise involves the children writing on their whiteboards and proudly displaying their work. The teaching segment includes writing some HFWs on the board, complete with sound buttons, and inviting volunteers to read them aloud. To engage the students further, a 'HFW Treasure Hunt' is set up, where children search for flashcards of real words and nonsense words hidden around the classroom, recording the real words they find. An extension activity encourages the children to construct sentences using as many of the HFWs as they can. Finally, the lesson concludes with mini whiteboard work, where children write the words dictated by the teacher, demonstrating their understanding and ability to apply the new vocabulary in writing.
