Week 20, lesson 5 Spelling High Frequency Words - Phonics Phase 5, unit 3- Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the final lesson of Week 20, the objective is to enhance the students' ability to spell high frequency words through a series of engaging activities. The lesson commences with a 'Quickwrite Words' exercise, where the teacher calls out words that have been covered during the week, focusing on graphemes that may require additional practice. Students write these words on their whiteboards and then display them for the class, facilitating a shared learning experience and immediate feedback.
During the 'Teach' segment, a student is invited to select a high frequency word from a hat. With the teacher's assistance if needed, the child decodes the word and announces it to the class. Another volunteer is then asked to identify the phonemes within the word, and together, the class articulates these sounds. The teacher models the spelling of the word, employing sound-talking to break down the phonemes, a technique particularly useful for tricky words such as 'people', 'come', 'back', 'when', 'very', and 'are'. The 'Practise' activity involves a 'Missing Letter' challenge, where words are presented on the board with a letter omitted. Students must deduce the correct letter to complete the word, enhancing their understanding of word structure. The lesson concludes with an 'Apply' phase, where children use mini whiteboards to write dictated words and sentences, consolidating their learning and demonstrating their ability to spell words like 'just', 'him', 'of', and 'they' in context.
