Week 13, lesson 5 High Frequency Words (out,this,have,went,be) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 2 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the final lesson of Week 13, the focus is on reinforcing the understanding of five high frequency words (HFW): out, this, have, went, be. The objective is clear: to review and consolidate the children's ability to recognise and use these words confidently. The lesson begins with a 'Word Breaker' activity where the teacher vocalises a word and the children are encouraged to break it down into its constituent phonemes before saying the word in unison again. This exercise is repeated with several words to ensure the children are actively engaging with the sounds that make up each word.
Following this, the teacher writes the words on the board, prompting the children to decode them and then to construct sentences using each word. To make the learning experience more dynamic, the children are invited to call out the words in a quick-fire manner, with the option of turning this into a fun game by having pairs of children respond. The practice phase incorporates a 'High Frequency Word Jump' where children must identify and react to the correct word as flashcards are shown. This physical activity helps to cement the words in their memory. Finally, the lesson concludes with the children using mini whiteboards to write down the words and phrases dictated by the teacher, allowing for individual assessment and the opportunity to apply what they've learned in a written format.
