Week 2, lesson 3 Spelling CCVC Words - Phonics Phase 4 - Lesson plan

During the third day of Week 2, the phonics lesson focuses on spelling CCVC words, which are words consisting of two consonants followed by a vowel and another consonant. The objective of the day is clearly stated: the children will learn to spell this new type of word. The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash' activity, designed to review the graphemes and pictophones that have been learned previously. The children are encouraged to shout out the phoneme associated with each grapheme and pictophone as they are displayed, with the pace gradually increasing to challenge their recall and recognition skills.

The teaching phase involves the educator drawing four phoneme frames on the board and demonstrating the process of sound-talking the word "stop" slowly. The children observe as the teacher works through the phonemes one by one, placing the corresponding graphemes into the frames. This process is then repeated with the word "spin" to reinforce the concept. In the practice phase, a 'Word Breaker' game is played where a word is spoken aloud and the children are tasked with segmenting it into its individual phonemes, before blending them back together. Example words for this activity include "trap", "grab", "spun", "flag", and "trick". Finally, the application of these skills is tested through 'Mini Whiteboard Work', where children are dictated a word, such as "snug" or "spit", to spell on their whiteboards and then display to the class for immediate feedback.
