Week 10, lesson 1 Spelling Two-Syllable Words - Phonics Phase 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the phonics lesson for Week 10, Day 1, the focus is on spelling two-syllable words. The objective of the lesson is clear: to practise spelling words that have two distinct syllables. The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash' activity where children quickly review various graphemes and pictophones they have learned, shouting out the corresponding sounds with increasing speed to reinforce their phonetic recognition.
The teaching segment introduces the 'Syllable Sounder' technique, where a two-syllable word such as "zigzag" is written on the whiteboard with a visual slash to separate the syllables. The teacher demonstrates sound-talking and blending each syllable before combining them to pronounce the whole word. Following this, children are encouraged to practise spelling with the help of a partner, using words like "hairpin" and writing their attempts on the board. The practice continues with team activities, where children clap out syllables of given words such as "letter", "goblin", and "batman", then write them down and compare their answers with the teacher's. To apply their learning, children are asked to spell a series of dictated two-syllable words on their mini whiteboards, like "cobweb", "shellfish", and "catnip". For those ready for an additional challenge, extension activities such as 'Sound Talk' and 'Sound Count' are available to further develop their phonetic and spelling skills.
