Outdoor and Adventure - Lesson 1
Physical Education Resource Description
The first lesson in the Year 6 Outdoor and Adventure series is designed to enhance teamwork and problem-solving skills among pupils. The lesson's objectives include the ability to follow instructions, work effectively as a team, and reflect on the group's dynamics. The class is divided into four teams, and the session begins with a warm-up activity called 'Hunt The Ball', where pupils search for a hidden object beneath cones, fostering quick thinking and team communication. This is followed by a series of team-building circuits, including the 'Tea Towel Transfer', 'Get In Order', 'Quicksand', and 'Cross The River' activities. These exercises challenge the pupils to transfer objects, line up in order blindfolded, navigate a safe path through 'quicksand', and cross a metaphorical river using limited resources, all while encouraging teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
To conclude the session, a cool-down activity involves pupils moving around and forming groups of varying numbers on command, with added challenges such as mixed-gender grouping, non-verbal communication, or blindfolding to simulate different scenarios. This part of the lesson is designed to reflect on the importance of being a good team player and to consider areas for improvement. Key vocabulary such as 'teamwork', 'communication', and 'encouragement' are emphasised throughout the lesson, with equipment like cones, tennis balls, tea towels, beanbags, blindfolds, and a 'quicksand chart' being utilised to facilitate the activities. This comprehensive lesson plan is structured to develop essential life skills through physical and interactive challenges.
