Max Maths, Year 5, Learn together, Multiplying multiples of 10 to 90 and multiples of 100 to 900 by a single-digit number
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 5 curriculum, students are encouraged to expand their understanding of multiplication by applying their times tables knowledge to larger numbers. Specifically, they learn how to multiply multiples of 10 up to 90 and multiples of 100 up to 900 by a single-digit number. This concept is explored on page 74 of the workbook, where students are taken through a series of examples and exercises designed to reinforce their mental calculation skills.
The learning process begins with a simple premise: if a student is familiar with basic multiplication facts, such as 4 × 6 = 24, they can apply this to larger numbers by simply adding zeros to the multiples of 10 and 100. For instance, knowing that 4 × 6 = 24, students can deduce that 40 × 6 equals 240 and 400 × 6 equals 2,400. This pattern holds true for other multiplication facts as well, such as 8 × 2 = 16 leading to 80 × 2 = 160 and 800 × 2 = 1,600. Students then put this knowledge into practice with exercises that prompt them to calculate similar multiplications, such as 40 × 9, 8 × 30, 700 × 7, and so on, reinforcing their understanding of how to work with multiples of 10 and 100 when multiplied by a single-digit number.
