Max Maths, Year 4, Learn together, Review of 2D and 3D shapes (1)
Maths Resource Description
In Year 4, students revisit the fundamental concepts of 2D and 3D shapes, building upon their knowledge from previous years. The lesson focuses on polygons, which are flat shapes with straight sides. A key distinction is made between regular polygons, where all sides and angles are equal, and irregular polygons, where this uniformity is not present. For example, a square is a regular polygon with four vertices and four sides of equal length, making it a familiar and easily identifiable shape.
Moving on from squares, the lesson covers rectangles, which also have four vertices and sides, but here only the opposite sides are of equal length. Circles are then discussed, highlighting their unique property of having a single curved side and no vertices at all. Triangles, with three sides and vertices, pentagons with five, hexagons with six, and octagons with eight, are also reviewed. Each shape's defining characteristics, such as the number of sides and vertices, are reiterated to strengthen the students' understanding of geometric properties.
