Max Maths, Year 3, Learn together, Comparing angles with a right angle
Maths Resource Description
In Year 3 maths, students are introduced to the concept of comparing angles with a right angle. A right angle is a fundamental angle in geometry, and it measures exactly 90 degrees. To understand angles better, it is important for students to recognise that some angles can be smaller or larger than a right angle. Angles that are smaller than a right angle are known as acute angles and measure less than 90 degrees. Conversely, angles that are larger than a right angle are referred to as obtuse angles and measure greater than 90 degrees.
To practically compare angles and determine whether they are smaller or larger than a right angle, students can use a set square. A set square is a handy tool that forms a right angle and can be placed next to an angle to visually assess its size. By doing this, students can easily identify if the angle they are looking at is acute or obtuse. This visual method of comparison helps to solidify their understanding of angles and their measurements relative to the standard right angle. Learning to compare angles in this way is an essential skill in the early stages of understanding geometry.
