Max Maths, Year 3, Try it, Word problems (2)
Maths Resource Description
In this Year 3 mathematics problem, students are presented with a practical scenario involving multiplication to solve a real-world problem. A baker has trays of buns, with each tray holding 6 buns. The question posed is how many buns are baked when the baker places 16 trays in the oven. To help visualise the problem, students are encouraged to draw a model, showing multiple trays with 6 buns each. The solution requires students to multiply the number of buns on one tray by the total number of trays, which can be done mentally. Partitioning, a method of breaking down numbers into parts to simplify calculations, can be used to assist in finding the answer.
Further practice is provided with additional word problems that require similar multiplication skills. One problem asks students to calculate the total number of coloured pencils if there are 12 in one box and there are 9 boxes in total. Another problem involves determining the total number of wheels by multiplying the number of wheels on one car (4) by the total number of cars (26). These exercises are designed to reinforce the concept of multiplication and its application in everyday situations. Students are directed to workbook pages 127 to 131 for more practice problems to consolidate their understanding.
