Max Maths, Year 2, Learn together, Multiplication as an array (2)
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths programme for Year 2, students are introduced to the concept of multiplication through visual arrays, making it easier to understand the relationship between multiplication and addition. For instance, when presented with an array of 15 dots arranged in rows and columns, children learn that this can represent the multiplication sentences 5 × 3 = 15 or 3 × 5 = 15. This demonstrates the commutative property of multiplication, showing that the order of factors does not affect the product.
The learning continues with different arrays, such as one with 6 eggs, which helps to illustrate that 3 × 2 = 6 or 2 × 3 = 6. This reinforces the idea that multiplication is not just about 'timesing' numbers, but also about counting objects arranged in rows and columns. When the array has an equal number of rows and columns, as with the 9 blocks arranged in a 3 by 3 grid, students discover that there is only one multiplication sentence possible, which is 3 × 3 = 9. To further practise these concepts, students are directed to workbook pages 83 to 84, where they can apply their understanding through various exercises.
