Max Maths, Year 1, Try it, Adding by bridging to 10
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Try it' section of the Max Maths Year 1 textbook, young learners are introduced to the concept of adding numbers by bridging to 10. The first activity encourages students to look at pictures and use them to group tens and ones. For example, they might see a representation of the number 9 and then determine what needs to be added to reach 10. This process is repeated with other numbers, such as 8, where students again figure out what is needed to make 10 and then add on the remaining amount.
The second activity involves adding by regrouping into tens and ones. Students are asked to colour triangles after regrouping to visually represent the process. They must then write out their addition sentence and the corresponding number bond, which helps to illustrate the relationship between the numbers. For instance, when adding 7 and another number, they first make 10 and then add the extra. This activity is designed to reinforce the concept of making a ten as a stepping stone to higher addition. The workbook pages 81 to 82 provide further practice for this skill.
