Max Maths, Year 1, Learn together, Comparing numbers to 10
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths programme for Year 1, young learners are introduced to the concept of comparing numbers up to 10. This particular lesson focuses on understanding the comparison between two sets of objects to determine which set has more. The lesson begins with a simple exercise where children are presented with two groups of everyday items, such as sharpeners and pencils. Initially, both sets contain an equal amount of items, in this case, three sharpeners and three pencils, prompting students to observe and conclude that there are the same number of sharpeners and pencils.
The learning experience is then extended by adding one more pencil to the set and asking the children to reassess the situation. This change provides an opportunity for the students to think critically about the concept of 'more' and 'the same'. The children are encouraged to count the items in each set again and determine if the number of pencils and sharpeners remains the same or if one set now has more. Through this interactive and practical approach, students learn to compare quantities and develop their counting skills in a fun and engaging way.
