Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division - Long division - 3-digits by 2-digits (no remainders) - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The lesson plan targets Year 6 students in their Autumn Term, focusing on the fifth day of the fifth week, and hones their skills in long division, specifically dividing 3-digit numbers by 2-digits without remainders. The 'Fluent in Four' revision segment kicks off with a series of arithmetic problems that require students to fill in the missing numbers in addition, subtraction, and multiplication equations. Additionally, they are tasked with measuring the perimeter of a given shape in millimetres, further applying their understanding of measurement and addition to find the total length around the shape.
As part of the mathematical exercises, students are presented with long division calculations such as dividing 2,565 by 45 and breaking down the division process by initially dividing by 5 and then by 9, enhancing their comprehension of factorisation and division strategies. Similarly, they work through the division of 1,952 by 32, with the option to sequentially divide by 2, then 4, and another 4, to simplify the process. These exercises are designed to reinforce the students' division skills and ensure they understand the relationship between division and multiplication. The lesson also includes practical applications, such as converting kilograms to grams and adding weights, as well as converting kilometres to metres, thereby integrating real-world contexts into their mathematical learning.
