Decimals - Decimal Sequences - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In this mathematical exercise designed for Year 5 students during their Summer Term, learners are encouraged to engage with decimal sequences and place value concepts. The lesson starts with a "Fluent in Four" revision session where students are tasked with various calculations that involve understanding and manipulating numbers in the hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, and hundredths places. For example, they must calculate the result of subtracting eighty-nine tens and 8 ones from a number composed of 4 hundreds, 7 ones, and 305 tens. Additionally, they are prompted to use a place value grid as a visual aid to help them add the whole number 324 to the decimal 4.63, reinforcing their comprehension of decimal addition.
Another part of the session includes a real-world application where students must determine the final balance of a business account after two withdrawals. Starting with a balance of £83,235, the business first withdraws £15,116 in the morning and then makes an additional withdrawal of £278 in the evening. Students must calculate the remaining balance at the end of the day. Lastly, the students use a bar model to explore fractions of a number, specifically finding one-ninth and six-ninths of 63. This helps them understand division and multiplication in the context of fractions, and they perform the calculations to find the respective values of 7 and 42. These exercises not only test the students' arithmetic skills but also enhance their problem-solving abilities and their understanding of mathematical concepts in everyday situations.
