Add and Subtract with dice - Practical Maths Activity
Maths Resource Description
Engage young minds with a hands-on maths activity designed to enhance addition and subtraction skills in accordance with the Year 2 National Curriculum objectives. This practical exercise requires only a simple set of equipment: a pair of dice. The objective is to help students recall and use addition and subtraction facts up to 20 with fluency, turning abstract concepts into tangible learning experiences.
The activity is suitable for individual play and involves rolling two dice, either from a cup or directly from the hand, onto a table. Once the dice come to rest, the student adds the two numbers displayed on the top faces of the dice. They then write down the corresponding number sentence, such as '5 + 3 = 8', to record their findings. This exercise not only reinforces arithmetic skills but also encourages the practice of writing and understanding number sentences, providing a comprehensive educational experience.
