Add and Subtract - Card and pens - Practical Maths Activity

This practical maths activity is designed to enhance addition and subtraction skills for Year 2 students, in line with the National Curriculum objectives. The aim is for students to recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 with fluency, and to derive and use related facts up to 100. To prepare for this engaging activity, you will need a laminator, card, and whiteboard pens.

To begin, copy the design provided onto a sheet of card and then laminate it for durability and reusability. Leave the design free of numbers, as these will be added during the activity. The game is intended for play in small groups, with two or more participants. Start by filling in the bottom row of each player's laminated sheet with different numbers ranging from 1 to 10, ensuring that each sheet has a unique combination of numbers. Provide each player with a laminated sheet and a pen. Players then add the numbers, working their way up the 'mountain' on the sheet. The goal is to reach the top of the mountain and determine who has the highest final number, symbolising who has 'climbed the highest'. This activity not only reinforces mathematical concepts but also introduces a fun, competitive element to learning.
