Length and Perimeter - What is perimeter activity - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a series of engaging activities designed for Year 3 students during their Spring Term, Week 9, Day 4 lesson, children explore the concept of perimeter and length. The lesson starts with a 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise, where students are challenged with a variety of mathematical problems, such as division and multiplication, to warm up their arithmetic skills. For example, they might be asked to divide 117 by 3 or find the result of 72 divided by 9. These exercises are designed to be quick and test the students' fluency in fundamental mathematical operations.
Following the warm-up, the children move onto more practical and visual mathematical problems. They are tasked with figuring out how many trees there might be if there are 40 snowflakes, using a given ratio. Another exercise involves drawing a route on a grid following specific directions that include forward movements and quarter turns both clockwise and anticlockwise. Additionally, the children are required to calculate the difference in length between two objects, such as a pen and a pencil, and express this difference in centimetres and millimetres. This hands-on approach to learning allows the children to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve problems in a fun and interactive way, reinforcing their understanding of perimeter and length measurement.
