Length and Perimeter - Add lengths - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a mathematics lesson targeting Year 3 students during the spring term, children are presented with various problems that require them to add lengths and understand the concept of perimeter. The lesson includes a 'Fluent in Four' revision section, where students tackle arithmetic problems, such as subtracting tens and ones from a given number. Another practical problem asks students to calculate the total distance driven by Tia's mum, who travels 72 miles to collect a parcel and then continues another 23 miles. Students are required to add these distances to determine the total miles driven.
Additionally, the lesson includes a task where students must identify the fraction of a set that is circled, enhancing their understanding of fractions in a visual and interactive way. To further develop their measurement skills, the children are asked to compare the lengths of pencils belonging to three different children. Mark's pencil measures 21 cm and 6 mm, Tom's is 162 mm, and Jack's is 219 mm long. Students are instructed to order these pencils in descending order by their lengths, which requires them to convert between centimetres and millimetres and to compare the lengths accurately. This exercise not only reinforces their understanding of length measurements but also their ability to arrange numbers in a given order.
