Money - Give change - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a series of engaging mathematical exercises tailored for Year 3 students during the Spring Term's fifth week, children practice their arithmetic and problem-solving skills. On Day 3, students are asked to calculate the total amount of money from two given amounts: £3 and 65p, and £5 and 99p. The task requires them to add these sums to find a combined total of £9 and 64p. Additionally, they are presented with a comparison task where they must use their knowledge of measurement to determine that 50 cm is shorter than 1 metre, as 1 metre equals 100 cm. These activities not only test their numerical fluency but also their understanding of the metric system.
Further into the week, on Day 4, students are invited to complete a tally chart by recording the total number of votes for favourite colours, and to accurately fill in a pictogram that represents different quantities of fruits using a given key. The exercises are designed to enhance their data handling skills. By Day 5, the focus shifts to weight comparison, where students determine that a bottle of milk weighs less than a cabbage. They also tackle subtraction and addition problems, solving equations such as 473 minus 194 and finding the sum of seven groups of five. These tasks encourage the development of their mathematical reasoning and their ability to describe and interpret data visually represented in pictograms.
