Multiplication and division - The 2 times table - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the first week of Year 3's Autumn term, students embark on mastering the 2 times table through a series of engaging activities. The lesson commences with a small step starter that recaps previous learning and ensures children are comfortable with the concept of multiplication. They are encouraged to use visual aids such as images and number tracks to count in twos, and concrete resources like cubes and number pieces to explore equal groups. Partner work is encouraged, prompting children to explain their understanding in full sentences. The class teaching input includes grouping objects in twos, relating this to prior knowledge about groups, and writing multiplication statements. An emphasis is placed on counting in multiples of two, both forwards and backwards, starting from zero to reinforce the concept that no groups of two equals zero.
During independent learning, students use a variety of methods, including concrete resources, drawing arrays, or using number lines to discover how many groups of two fit within a given number. The plenary includes reasoning and problem-solving exercises where children determine the quantity in each group and discuss the properties of odd and even numbers, particularly in relation to the 2 times table. Key questions are posed to deepen understanding, such as calculating the number of 2p coins needed to make 16p and exploring the relationship between multiples of two and even numbers. Differentiated sheets are provided to cater to varying levels of proficiency, from 'Working Towards' to 'Expected' and 'Greater Depth', each with tasks designed to consolidate learning and encourage students to apply their knowledge practically, ensuring they grasp the foundational concepts of multiplication and division through the 2 times table.
