Place value - Tens and ones using addition - Planning
Maths Resource Description
The Year 3 Autumn Place Value curriculum focuses on understanding 'Tens and Ones' through the use of addition, employing various resources to aid learning. During the first week, children are introduced to the concept of partitioning numbers into tens and ones using part whole models. The lesson utilises straws, part whole models, Base 10 blocks, worksheets, and a presentation to help visualise the numbers. Key vocabulary includes terms such as 'place value', 'representation', 'digit', 'numeral', 'tens', and 'ones'. The lesson begins with a recap of previous learning and a starter activity where children complete 'fluent in four' questions to warm up their mathematical thinking.
Initially, children revisit the concept of tens and ones by grouping straws into sets of tens and individual ones, placing them into a whole and then separating them into parts, reinforcing the strategy with stem sentences. This hands-on approach is further developed with partner work, where children use part whole models and dice to build numbers, practising partitioning and verbalising the process. Moving forward, the lesson includes activities that explore partitioning two-digit numbers in different ways, deepening understanding through reasoning activities supported by concrete resources. Children are encouraged to articulate their understanding using stem sentences and to explore partitioning with the aid of equipment or drawings. The lesson addresses common misconceptions such as mixing up tens and ones and recognising the value of each digit. To assess understanding, children reflect on what they've learned and the skills they've used, ensuring they remember how to partition numbers effectively. Differentiated tasks are provided to cater to varying levels of mastery, from working towards understanding to achieving greater depth.
