Maths Resource Description
In the 'Fluent in Four' revision section of the Year 2 Summer Term curriculum for Week 7, Day 2, students are presented with a series of arithmetic problems to enhance their numerical fluency. They are tasked with simple subtraction questions such as "68 – 53 =", which aims to solidify their understanding of basic subtraction. Another problem requires them to conceptualise numbers in tens and ones, asking them to subtract "Nine tens and 8 ones" from "9 ones and eight tens", thereby reinforcing place value concepts. This exercise is designed to build confidence and accuracy in handling numbers.
The lesson also incorporates time-telling activities, where students are asked to identify times such as "Half past 5" and match clock faces to given times like "10 o’clock" and "5 o’clock". Additionally, there are exercises that require students to complete equations with missing numbers to reach a sum of four or six, and another where they must determine the value of shapes to solve a puzzle. A pictogram activity is included, where students must use a key to fill in the correct number of symbols representing different fruits – pears, apples, cherries, and bananas – to visually represent data. These varied tasks are designed to engage students in practical applications of maths, from interpreting visual information to solving problems with time and arithmetic.
