Maths Resource Description
In an engaging mathematics session for Year 2 students, the lesson begins with a 'Fluent in Four' revision activity aimed at consolidating their understanding of basic addition. The children are presented with a fun challenge that combines their arithmetic skills and knowledge of time, as they are tasked with adding numbers like 3, 8, and 9 to determine the time on the clock, in this case, 10 o'clock. The lesson then transitions to reinforcing place value concepts, where students identify the number of tens and ones in a given grid and translate this into numerical form, enhancing their comprehension of two-digit numbers.
Further deepening their place value knowledge, the children calculate one-half of various two-digit numbers, breaking them down into tens and ones to find the answers. This exercise is designed to promote mental arithmetic and an understanding of number partitioning. The session also includes sentence completion exercises that incorporate movement and direction, such as determining how many lily pads a ladybird moves to the right and the direction an ant moves. Additionally, the children tackle a more complex problem that combines tens and ones, where they must find the sum of two more than four tens and two ones less than forty ones, leading to an answer of 80. These varied activities not only reinforce numerical fluency but also encourage logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
