Position and direction - Assessment
Maths Resource Description
The assessment for Year 2 students on Position and Direction involves a series of tasks designed to test their understanding of spatial concepts using simple language and relatable scenarios. One part of the assessment presents a scenario with animals and lily pads, where students must use positional words like 'above', 'below', 'left', and 'right' to describe the location of one object relative to another. For instance, they might be asked to state whether the sheep is above or below the bird, and to indicate the movements of a ladybird or frog in terms of lily pads to the left or right. Additionally, they are prompted to draw symbols such as an egg or an 'X' in specific positions relative to other objects, like to the left of the sheep or where the frog is now after moving.
Another section of the assessment presents an octopus and asks students to express their confidence in position and direction by circling an option. They are also challenged to continue a pattern by drawing shapes and to identify the orientation of the octopus after a quarter turn clockwise. Moreover, they must demonstrate their understanding of rotational turns by selecting the correct option that would return the octopus to its starting position, be it a half turn, quarter turn clockwise or anti-clockwise, or a three-quarter turn anti-clockwise. This exercise not only assesses the children's ability to recognise positions and directions but also their comprehension of rotational symmetry and spatial reasoning.
