Position and direction - Describe position 2 - Planning
Maths Resource Description
The lesson plan for Year 2 students during the summer term on Position and Direction focuses on enhancing their understanding of describing the position of objects in relation to others. The lesson begins with a small step starter, where students recap their previous learning by identifying who is in front of, behind, and to the left or right of them. This is followed by a class teaching input that introduces key vocabulary such as 'near', 'far', 'on top of', 'in front of', 'above', 'between', 'around', 'middle', 'left', 'right', 'top', 'bottom', 'relation', and 'position'. Students engage in Partner Talk to discuss the positions of their classmates and then participate in practical activities using classroom objects and post-it notes to describe their positions relative to one another.
During the group work, children use objects to organise and describe their positions, adhering to instructions and even creating their own for peers to follow. The lesson progresses with independent activities using differentiated worksheets to cater to varying levels of understanding. After the independent work, reasoning questions are tackled collectively, encouraging discussion and collaboration. The lesson aims to address common misconceptions, such as confusion with synonyms for positional terms and the concept of 'relation'. The plenary involves a 'Give me five' activity where students reflect on their learning, the skills they used, and what they found challenging. The lesson supports different levels of learning, from working towards the expected level to achieving greater depth, with activities tailored to help children describe the position of objects using specific positional language.
