Length and height - Problem solving with lengths - Starter

In a series of exercises aimed at Year 2 students during their Summer Term, the focus is on problem-solving with lengths and basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The 'Fluent in Four' revision segment prompts students to engage with various mathematical challenges. For instance, they are asked to determine the difference in length between paper strips belonging to Esin and Leanna, and to calculate simple subtractions like 28 minus 9. The exercises also include practical applications of maths, such as adding up the total value of coins in jars or the total number of crayons in packs, reinforcing the concepts of addition and multiplication.

Further activities encourage the development of mathematical reasoning, including story problems that involve working out the height of cubes when given the total height of a teddy on top of them. Additionally, students are tasked with identifying numerals and writing the corresponding words for numbers represented in a tens and ones format, such as 17 (seventeen) and 92 (ninety-two). The exercises also include a visual element where students must determine what fraction of a shape is shaded, providing a well-rounded approach to their maths revision. These activities are designed to help students become fluent in basic arithmetic and to understand the practical applications of maths in everyday scenarios.
