Money - Finding change - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the second week of the Autumn term, Year 2 students learn about finding change in the context of money and measurement. This lesson builds on their existing subtraction skills and introduces them to the concept of converting pounds to pence. Using differentiated resources such as worksheets, teaching slides, and various models like the part-whole and bar models, children learn to identify coin amounts and calculate change efficiently. Key vocabulary such as 'money', 'subtraction', 'change', 'converting', and 'number bond' is emphasised, with vocabulary cards available to support learning. Children apply their knowledge by writing number sentences to work out change and are encouraged to discuss their reasoning in full sentences during partner work.
The lesson is structured to promote understanding through a series of activities that guide students in visualising and calculating change. They begin by equating one pound to 100 pence, which is crucial for the activities that follow. Students are then presented with scenarios involving spending and receiving change, where they must use subtraction or counting to determine the remaining amount of money. Reasoning and problem-solving tasks challenge them to calculate change for items and consider different coin denominations that could be used for payment. The lesson is differentiated to cater to varying levels of ability, with some children finding change from a single coin, while others tackle more complex word problems involving multiple coins and items. Reflection at the end of the lesson encourages students to consider what they have learned about calculating change and the strategies they used.
