Place value - Counting in 10s - Planning
Maths Resource Description
Year 2 students are set to explore the concept of counting in increments of 10 during their Autumn Place Value Week. The lesson is structured to begin with a starter activity where children answer questions to review what they have previously learned. The class teaching input involves displaying a 100 square on the whiteboard and guiding the children to count in tens starting from zero. The students engage in partner discussions to predict which numbers they will say and which they will not. A variety of resources, such as bead strings, counters, and worksheets, are provided to support the learning process. During the lesson, the children work with counters to visualise and group sets of ten, using the 100 square as a reference when necessary.
The independent learning phase of the lesson consists of activities from the presentation, which the children complete before moving on to worksheet tasks. Throughout the lesson, key questions prompt students to reflect on patterns they observe while counting in tens. In addressing common misconceptions, it is emphasised that counting should start from the number ten when a group of ten is visible. The plenary involves a 'Give me five' reflection exercise where students consider what they've learned, the skills they've used, and what they found challenging. The worksheets are differentiated to cater to varying levels of understanding, from those working towards the expected level with number line aids, to those at greater depth who count beyond 100 and tackle two-step problems, encouraging a deeper understanding of counting in tens.
