Place value within 10 - Counting from a group - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the early stages of Year 1, during the Autumn Term, children are introduced to the concept of place value within the number range of 1 to 10. On Day 3 of Week 1, they engage in activities designed to consolidate their counting skills and understanding of numbers. The 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise is a key part of the starter activity, where children use number shapes—a visual aid—to assist with their calculations. This tactile approach helps young learners to grasp the value of numbers and simple arithmetic operations in a more concrete manner.
The exercises include a variety of tasks such as finding half of 6, doubling the number 1, and adding these results together. Children are also challenged to add 3 and 6 using their number shapes. To further reinforce their counting skills, students are asked to identify specific numbers from a group and match them with their corresponding number shapes. In a more complex task, they find the number shape representing the number 2, double it, and discover the new number they have created. These activities are designed to be interactive and engaging, providing a strong foundation for young learners to develop their numeracy skills.
