Place value within 10 - Counting to 10 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
On Day 2 of Week 1 in the Autumn Term for Year 1, the lesson focuses on understanding place value within the number range of 1 to 10. The session begins with a hands-on activity where children are encouraged to use 10 coloured cubes to explore basic mathematical concepts. The 'Fluent in Four - Revision' section prompts the children to perform simple calculations and visual matching exercises. For instance, they are asked to subtract 4 from 10 and to construct a tower with their cubes that resembles a given picture. This activity not only reinforces counting skills but also introduces the concept of subtraction in a practical and engaging manner.
The lesson continues with further interactive tasks that involve the cubes. Children are instructed to count out 3 cubes, and then double this amount, enabling them to grasp the concept of multiplication in a tangible way. They are also challenged to calculate the result of doubling 4 and then subtracting double 2 from it, which combines multiplication and subtraction in one exercise. As they work through these activities, the children are asked to observe how the objects have been grouped and to count the total number of cubes used, thereby deepening their understanding of number composition and the basic operations of addition and subtraction within the number range up to 10.
