Place value within 10 - Counting forwards - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the second week of Year 1 Autumn term maths planning, the focus is on understanding place value within 10, with particular emphasis on counting forwards. The National Curriculum objectives for this unit include counting to and from ten, starting from any number, and recognising both numerals and words for these numbers. Key vocabulary such as 'digit', 'place value', 'numeral', and 'sequence' is introduced, and children are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these terms. To aid learning, a variety of resources are employed, including differentiated sheets, teaching slides, and practical counting objects like counters and cubes. A number track is also used to visually represent numbers and assist with counting exercises.
The lesson starts with a recap of previous learning, where children are reminded of the concept of zero and its placement before one. They are then involved in partner work, using presentations and activities to understand how to represent 'nothing' and to identify the starting point of a number track. The lesson plan acknowledges that children may have different preferences for counting aids, such as objects or number tracks, and provides options to cater to various learning needs. To consolidate understanding, children engage in independent activities with worksheets tailored to their level of proficiency, ranging from 'Working Towards' to 'Greater Depth'. The lesson concludes with a reflective 'Give me five' exercise, where children assess their learning and identify any challenges they faced, ensuring they retain key concepts from the session.
