Take from 8
Maths Resource Description
"Take from 8" is a fun and educational game designed to help children practice and reinforce their number facts of eight. To play this game, a few simple items are required: a 0-9 dice, a digit board, and some counters for each player. The objective of the game is to develop fluency with subtraction facts related to the number eight, and it is suitable for players of all ages who are learning basic arithmetic.
The gameplay involves players taking turns to roll the dice and then subtracting the number they roll from eight. The result of this subtraction is then used to cover the corresponding number on the digit board. For instance, if a player rolls a six, they would cover the number two on the board because 8 minus 6 equals 2. Rolls of eight or nine are exceptions, prompting a re-roll. The first player to successfully align four of their counters in a row—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—wins the game. While playing, participants are encouraged to discuss the connections between the facts that make ten and to observe patterns with odd and even numbers, enhancing their understanding of numerical relationships.
