Number 17 - CanDo Bonds
Maths Resource Description
The CanDo Bonds activity is a fun and interactive way for children to practice and reinforce their understanding of number bonds that total 17. The activity is designed with a variety of tasks to engage young learners. Initially, children are invited to 'Create it' by completing dominoes so that the sum of the numbers on each domino equals 17. They can 'Colour it' by adding dots or writing numbers, and then 'Jot it' by recording the corresponding number sentences. For example, to make a total of 17, they might pair 9 with 8 or 10 with 7.
Further tasks include 'Join it', where children colour all boxes that add up to 17 to form a path across a grid, and 'Snap it', where they solve problems involving 17 cubes, determining how many have been snapped off from each line. They also have the opportunity to 'Solve it' by drawing models and creating as many number sentences as possible for a given scenario, such as the number of free seats in a minibus or the age difference between two individuals. The activity ends with a 'Make it' challenge, where children use the bonds of 7 to create bonds of 17, completing number sentences to solidify their understanding. This comprehensive set of exercises is an excellent tool for enhancing mathematical fluency in young learners.
