Learn The Initial Phonic Sounds 'r, m, u' (3 years +) - Teacher Notes
English Resource Description
The Guinea Pig Education's approach to teaching reading is both innovative and efficient, aiming to equip children with the necessary skills to read within six to twelve months. The system is centred around phonics, which involves teaching the sounds that make up words. This method provides children with a foundational 'tool' to decode approximately 80% of the English language, while the remaining 20% will be acquired through recognition and repetition. The Pre Reader Work Packs are specifically designed for non-readers and introduce initial phonic sounds like 'r', 'm', and 'u' through engaging activities such as word games, including snap and bingo.
These packs are user-friendly, offering clear guidance for adults working with individual children or groups. They encourage young learners, starting from the age of three or four, to build words and construct sentences by blending sounds. The material is structured in a way that each new sound is an extension of the previous one, ensuring a progressive learning experience. Children are also encouraged to interact creatively with the content by personalising the drawings and repeatedly playing the games to reinforce their learning. The aim is to make reading an enjoyable activity, with the recommendation that the material should be practised daily and only progressed when the child is comfortable with the content.
