The Snow Spider - Session 1 - Word Workshop
English Resource Description
The 'Word Workshop' sessions are an engaging and educational activity designed to enhance vocabulary knowledge for KS2 students. In each session, students are provided with a word and are tasked with exploring its meaning, usage in sentences, and its various forms. They are encouraged to modify the word by adding prefixes or suffixes, changing the verb tense, or adjusting it to singular or plural forms. Additionally, students are asked to identify synonyms—words with similar meanings—and antonyms—words with opposite meanings—to deepen their understanding of the language and its nuances.
For example, the word 'unusual' might be explored for its meaning as something that is not common or ordinary. Students could use it in a sentence like, "The magician's unusual trick left the audience in awe." They could modify it to 'unusually' to describe something, and might list 'extraordinary' as a synonym and 'ordinary' as an antonym. This exercise is repeated with a variety of words such as 'disappointed', 'inquired', 'ancestor', and many more, each offering a unique opportunity to expand the students' vocabulary and grasp of English language concepts. The workshop is an effective way to encourage active learning and foster a love for words and their power.
