The Last Bear - Session 4 - Word Workshop

The 'Word Workshop' is an educational exercise designed to enhance vocabulary and language skills among KS2 students. In this workshop, participants are given a word and asked to explore its various aspects. This includes understanding the meaning(s) of the word, using it in a sentence, modifying it by adding prefixes or suffixes, changing its number or tense, and identifying synonyms and antonyms. For example, with the word 'annoyingly', students would classify it as an adverb, use it in a sentence to demonstrate its meaning, and then discuss words with similar or opposite meanings. This exercise helps students deepen their comprehension of language and its nuances, which is vital for effective communication and writing.

Another aspect of the workshop is the focus on word classes, which helps students recognize the grammatical categories words belong to, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. For instance, 'frustration' would be identified as a noun, and students would be encouraged to use it in context, explore its variations, and discuss related and contrasting words. This multifaceted approach to vocabulary building not only enhances students' understanding of individual words but also their overall linguistic competence, enabling them to express themselves more clearly and creatively in both spoken and written English.
