The Last Bear - Session 1 - Hopes and Fears
English Resource Description
In the first session of "The Last Bear", a narrative exploration aimed at KS2 students, we delve into the emotional landscape of the main characters, April and her father, as they embark on a six-month journey to Bear Island. This session prompts students to consider and discuss the possible hopes and fears that April and her father might experience as they adjust to their new, temporary home. The exercise encourages empathy and understanding by asking students to step into the characters' shoes and articulate the aspirations and apprehensions that come with moving to an unfamiliar place.
The worksheet is divided into sections for students to record their thoughts on what April and her father might hope to find or achieve on Bear Island, as well as the worries and concerns they could have about this significant change in their lives. This activity not only aids in comprehension of the story's themes but also serves as a tool for developing emotional literacy. By reflecting on the characters' internal experiences, students can engage more deeply with the narrative and enhance their ability to express complex emotions, both in the context of the story and in their own lives.
