The Explorer - Session 16 - Word Workshop
English Resource Description
The "Word Workshop" is a structured activity designed to enhance vocabulary skills among KS2 students. In this session, learners are provided with a variety of words and are tasked with exploring their meanings, usage, modifications, and relationships to other words through synonyms and antonyms. For example, with the word 'casually', students would identify its meaning, construct a sentence using it, modify it by changing its form or tense, and list words with similar and opposite meanings. This exercise not only broadens their vocabulary but also deepens their understanding of language nuances.
Each word presented in the workshop, such as 'dolorous', 'pungent', 'ordinary', and 'reconstructed', is examined in a similar fashion. Students are encouraged to engage with the words creatively and analytically, transforming them with prefixes or suffixes, and considering their grammatical class. The workshop also prompts learners to think critically about the words' applications and their antonyms, thereby contrasting concepts such as 'taut' with its opposite, or 'uncooperative' with a word that conveys a willingness to work together. This methodical approach to vocabulary building is a fundamental aspect of language learning in the KS2 curriculum.
