The Explorer - Session 5 - Word Workshop
English Resource Description
The Explorer - Session 5 Word Workshop is an interactive learning activity designed to enhance vocabulary skills amongst KS2 pupils. In this workshop, each participant is encouraged to explore a specific word, understand its meanings, and use it in a sentence. The exercise also prompts learners to modify the word by adding prefixes or suffixes, changing its form to plural or singular, or altering the verb tense, thereby deepening their grasp of English language mechanics. Additionally, students are asked to identify synonyms—words with similar meanings—and antonyms—words with opposite meanings—to each given term, further expanding their linguistic repertoire.
Words such as 'flimsily', 'distract', 'distrust', 'sarcastic', 'expelled', 'relief', 'pulsating', 'sceptical', 'register', 'emotion', and 'writhing' are explored in this session. For each word, learners must determine its word class, such as noun, verb, adjective, or adverb, which aids in understanding how it functions within a sentence. This educational exercise not only enriches students' vocabulary but also hones their analytical skills as they discern and apply word classes, recognise the nuances of language, and practice constructing meaningful sentences. The Word Workshop is an engaging way to promote language proficiency and confidence in young learners.
