The Explorer - Session 1 - Word Workshop
English Resource Description
The 'Word Workshop' is a structured activity designed to enhance vocabulary and language comprehension among KS2 students. Each session prompts learners to explore a specific word in detail, including its meaning(s), usage in context, and morphological variations. For instance, students may be asked to provide synonyms and antonyms, demonstrating their grasp of a word's connotations and its position within a network of related terms. The exercise also encourages creativity in word modification, such as adding prefixes or suffixes, forming plurals or singulars, or altering verb tenses, thus deepening their understanding of English grammar and word formation.
Words such as 'concentration', 'vibrated', 'swerve', 'reflection', 'grimacing', 'determinedly', 'deserted', 'ferocious', 'insisted', and 'lurched' serve as focal points for these sessions. Each word is examined for its lexical category, which aids in understanding its function in sentences. By using the word in a sentence, students practice contextualising vocabulary, which enhances their ability to communicate effectively. This comprehensive approach not only builds a robust vocabulary but also equips students with the skills to analyse and understand new words independently, fostering a lifelong engagement with language.
