Darwin's Dragons - Session 2 - Word Workshop
English Resource Description
The "Darwin's Dragons" Word Workshop is an educational exercise designed to expand the vocabulary of KS2 students. In the session, pupils are encouraged to explore various aspects of selected words, including their meanings, usage in sentences, modifications through prefixes, suffixes, or verb tense changes, as well as identifying synonyms and antonyms. For example, with the word "performance," students would classify its word class, use it in a sentence, modify it to create different forms such as "performances" or "performed," and then list words with similar and opposite meanings. This comprehensive approach not only enhances their understanding of each word but also develops their linguistic skills in a structured and engaging manner.
Another aspect of the workshop involves words like "navigation," "survive," "concentrate," and "observe," which students delve into by performing similar exercises. They learn to modify words like "navigation" to "navigational" or "navigating," and find antonyms to contrast the original terms. Through this interactive process, students gain a deeper appreciation for the nuances of the English language. The workshop also introduces them to less common words such as "maudlin" and "colossal," broadening their vocabulary and preparing them for more advanced language use. Each word is carefully chosen to stimulate curiosity and encourage a love for language among the young learners.
