Inspired by: The Viewer - Medium Term Plan

The Viewer, a Year 5 literacy module, is meticulously structured to enhance comprehension, composition, and grammar skills through a series of weekly objectives. In week one, students are encouraged to provide reasoned justifications for their views, mirroring the critical thinking skills of authors in developing narrative characters and settings. Additionally, they focus on the technical aspect of writing by using hyphens to avoid ambiguity in their work. As the weeks progress, the objectives become more complex, guiding students through predicting narrative outcomes, describing settings and characters with depth, and mastering verb tenses to express time and cause. Poetry recitation, précis writing, and the use of cohesive devices within paragraphs further develop their literary skills. By week four, students are making intertextual comparisons and honing their proofreading skills, while also learning to use relative clauses effectively. The module culminates with students summarising main ideas across multiple paragraphs, enhancing cohesion across their writing, and manipulating sentence structure through passive verbs.
