Inspired by: Greek Myths - Week 5
English Resource Description
Inspired by the timeless Greek myths, a series of educational activities invites students to delve into the concept of flight, tracing its portrayal from ancient legends to modern-day technology. The tale of Daedalus and Icarus serves as a starting point for making comparisons across texts, with a focus on the structure and presentation of information. Students are encouraged to explore the history of flight, from the mythical attempts of Icarus to the engineering feats of Leonardo Da Vinci and the contemporary Birdman competition. The activities aim to enhance students' understanding of how human flight has evolved and how it is represented in various forms of writing and media.
Another activity taps into the creative minds of students by asking them to reimagine the conversation between Daedalus and Icarus before their fateful flight. This exercise is designed to foster an understanding of audience and purpose in writing, as well as to develop emotional depth through imagined dialogue. In addition, the students are tasked with observing the 'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus' painting and recounting the event from the perspective of a bystander, using adverbials of time to create cohesion in their narratives. They also practice constructing sentences with commas and relative clauses to clarify meaning and add detail to the scenes depicted in the artwork.
