Inspired by: Blodin The Beast - Week 2
English Resource Description
Students are encouraged to expand their sentence construction skills by incorporating a variety of conjunctions such as 'when', 'if', 'because', and 'although'. The lesson draws inspiration from Michael Morpurgo's depiction of the ferocious Blodin, whose roar causes the earth to tremble. Pupils are tasked with imagining further consequences of Blodin's roar and the reactions of a slave character. They are prompted to create complex sentences beginning with 'When he...', to explore the range of possible events and reactions triggered by Blodin's actions. This activity aims to enhance their understanding of multi-clause sentences and the use of conjunctions to link ideas.
Another aspect of the lesson delves into the magic of storytelling through the theme of magical carpets, as featured in Morpurgo's narrative. Students are introduced to Shanga, a wise man weaving a carpet imbued with protective qualities. The carpet serves as a symbol of hope and goodness, contrasting with the ill-fated Pandora's box. Children are encouraged to think about what they would weave into their own magical carpet, using abstract nouns and metaphorical language to describe virtues and positive emotions. They are also asked to create descriptive passages using metaphors, to convey the essence of their magical carpets, enriching their vocabulary and understanding of figurative language.
