Why do shadows have the same shape as objects that cast them? - Teacher's Notes
Science Resource Description
This brief unit is designed for Year 3 pupils who have previously studied the concept of shadows. The objective is to deepen their understanding by engaging them in a hands-on activity involving shadow puppets. Pupils are expected to observe a variety of examples provided on a sheet and discuss with their peers which shadow puppets they find most effective or appealing. This discussion serves as a precursor to the creative task where they will craft their own shadow puppets, allowing them to apply their understanding of shadows in a practical and imaginative way.
The culmination of the unit requires pupils to articulate their understanding of shadows. They are encouraged to explain in their own words the reasons behind the formation of shadows and why a shadow mimics the shape of the object that casts it. This exercise not only consolidates their knowledge but also promotes critical thinking and communication skills. Additionally, pupils are prompted to consider the role of eyes in the process of seeing, which ties in with the broader topic of light and vision. Through these activities, the unit aims to foster a more comprehensive grasp of how light interacts with objects to create shadows that correspond to their shapes.
